International Symposium of Ecohydrology and Water Security: Opportunities & Challenges from Developing Countries

Xi’an, Shaanxi, China

16-18 October, 2018

Goal

The 2018 International Symposium of Ecohydrology and Water Security (ISEWS) will serve as an international forum, inviting researchers in the areas of ecohydrology and emerging water research, with a focus on interactions among water and ecosystems, water resources, and water security. In Particular, the related new opportunities and challenges from developing countries will be discussed together with industrial representatives, policymakers, and stakeholders. The critical concerns and significant future challenges as well as scientific and strategic responses will be identified.

Water security issues in developing countries, especially in underdeveloped areas of Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa, are of special significance considering the large population and unsafe water resource situation. Researches that put forward suggestions and solutions for water resources management and water security issues to help the developing countries are thus essential also in line with the Belt and Road Initiative in China.

Xi'an, known as Chang’an (meaning the eternal city) in ancient times, has a history of more than 3,000 years. For 1,100 years, the city was the capital for 13 dynasties, and a total of 73 emperors ruled here. Having served as the capital city for the Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang dynasties, Xi'an is one of the birthplaces of the ancient Chinese civilization. With such a rich history, Xi'an, as the eastern terminal of the famous Silk Road, has more than 4,000 historical sites, with over 120,000 pieces of unearthed cultural relics. The must-see historical sites of cultural heritage include the Museum of Terracotta Warriors and Horses, the Ancient City Walls of the Ming Dynasty, the Forest of Stone Steles Museum, and the Ancient Huaqing Pool (the Huaqing Hot Springs). The Museum of Terracotta Warriors and Horses is praised as "the Eighth Wonder of the World". Today the city also has a pleasant cosmopolitan flair to it. Visitors can take a walk on the renovated ancient city walls and ring the ancient bells and drums at the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower; indulge yourself in the breathtaking Shaanxi Historic Museum for ancient Chinese mural paintings and other gorgeous relics enjoy the delicious local food; and treat yourself with amazing Xi’an drum music or traditional drama.
